Black Friday: The day after Thanksgiving when there are tons of sales. You want to be first in line to get that new 3D HD LED TV you’ve been wanting ever since you heard of it. Then you want to be first in line to pay, first to jump on the couch, first to watch a show and first to enjoy the beautiful high quality pictures come to life in front of your very eyes. You want to be first in everything that has to do with the TV. Well, that same concept is true for your business on the internet.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. When most people are searching for something, they nearly always go to a search engine, such as Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, to find what they are looking for. What first appears on the results page are the websites that best fits the criteria you search for. For example, someone searches for “Web marketing.” Melaroo Web Marketing would pop up because on Melaroo’s website (and name), we mention “web marketing”. So, in order to even show up on a search, you must use the keywords (“web” and “marketing”) in the description tag, and at least twice in the text near the top of your page. But you don’t want to overuse the keywords though.
So how do search engines rank websites? Many factors go into it, but we’ll just go into a few.
First of all, “PPC” or pay-per-click. Basically, a company pays to be the top result on a search engine for a certain keyword(s). It’s like if Melaroo paid to be the first search result on Google if someone typed in “web marketing”.
Search engines also look at relevancy. Relevance is determined by the “importance” of a webpage by finding what other websites are linked to it as well as other data. So if you have tons of links to other pages and data that pertain to the topic (ex. “web marketing”) then you’ll be more relevant and higher in the ranks.
And this leads us to another way search engines rank websites: backlinks. Backlinks are basically links to other pages that are relevant to a keyword. It’s like if you have a friend that owns the same type of company as you do. They put a link on their website to you, and suddenly, you two are connected by a backlink. But you’re also connected to your friend’s links, so now you have a whole web of connections. The more backlinks you have, the more relevant your site becomes and the higher your ranking will become. It’s like networking.
Search engines have bugs as their employees. Search engine spiders (or crawlers) collect information from your website and deposits it into a database. When you’re searching for something on a search engine, you’re actually searching through a database. In order to be in that database, you want to be nice to the spiders and make your site “search engine friendly.” This means that you just need to have all your links on every webpage of your website so the spider can take notes on everything you have on your entire website.
So after you become the first site on a search engine’s results, people who are looking for a specific company or product will come to your website and start purchasing your product or service. That’s the goal of SEO.
