Everyone of my friends is on Facebook. And everyone keeps asking if I have one. “You don’t have one? Why? Everyone is on Facebook!” “Uh because my mom doesn’t want me to have one because it’s dangerous?” “You can just change the settings and make it private.” “Oh yeah.” (*Sneaks away silently, ashamed about not being on the most popular website in the world [with 500 million users globally]) And that shows how big Facebook, YouTube, and other social media giants are in the lives of teenagers (10,680,140 Facebook users ages 13-17, and the average person spends 15 minutes on YouTube). We use it to communicate: talk with friends, get updates on recent events, stay in touch with other people, be entertained, share information, and express ourselves. Those are just the obvious reasons. Now with adults embracing the new social media (328.1% Facebook user growth ages 35-54), students can ask teachers questions, get assignments, and view tips online. Some teens can even network through a site and find a job.

It’s no wonder tons of teens spend so much time on the internet. There are so many things they can do (more than 500,000 Facebook applications)! Some of my friends can stay up ‘til the wee hours of dawn chatting away or browsing through pictures. I’ve even stayed up watching videos on YouTube. With the many social media sites on the web, it’s hard to keep track of all of them. Here are some popular ones and what teens use it for.

Popular Social Media and Their Uses

Facebook: You can write on your friend’s wall, change your status, and comment on pictures. Facebook is ideal for chatting, seeing what people are doing, and updating others on what’s going on. Facebook is fast and easy to use. It also has different activities you can do like games and picture browsing. Plus, it’s looks cool.

Alternative: The Infamous Twitter (not popular with most teens)

YouTube: You can find any video about anything on just one website. You can comment and rate other people’s work too. It’s easy to navigate, search, and share videos with friends too! YouTube is great for a funny or informative video.

Alternative: Google Videos (useful for bypassing school firewalls)

Gmail: Customizable e-mail by Google that’s easy to use. It puts things in modern, easy-to-understand slang. It also has tons of other features to share different things (like GoogleDocs for projects) and customize the Google Search engine interface.

Alternative: Yahoo! Mail
