Teaching Social Media

Today, I taught a class on social media for Frontier Title. We had a small class, but it was a great group. I must say, I was a little worried that the class would be a struggle, because the attendees were a little older than the typical age of social media adopters, but I was completely shocked. The group really sunk into the content, and I think they learned a lot. There were a lot of great questions, and I think we will see some new Twitter accounts and more involved facebook users. There will be some great blog posts from some realtors and mortgage bankers in Katy soon!
As I went through the content, we took a side note and talked a lot about a blog and its importance. I neglected to add content about blogs and websites, but then I realized that was actually a whole other class. Social media is very important, but you must find a place to drive traffic to capitalize on your reach. The blog and website is the best place because you have the most control over both.

I thought I should touch on blogs, especially since we are in the midst of one, and explain them a little bit more. Blogs are great places to share content and resources because readers are more forgiving in blogs. They are looking for the raw content. Visitors also find blogs to be more honest and sincere.

There are several great places for blogs, but I really recommend wordpress. Take a look at wordpress.com, and you can find plenty of information on setting one up. Finally, what should you blog about? Find something you care about. An established realtor in Katy said she focuses on lost pets. She posts about pets lost in the Katy area, and you may wonder how this connects to being a realtor. Absolutely nothing, but she is providing a resource. She is providing a service that people in the community can rely on, and she can remind them she is a realtor from time to time. Bottom line, you should find something that you are interested in, passionate about, or have a lot of information about. You don't want to start a blog and lose steam 2 months in and abandon the blog.

So after going through the class today, I learned that I need to put more focus on blogs and how they are incorporated into social media.
